With the ‘Our Cultural Heart’ project underway, Huddersfield is embarking on an exciting new phase of regeneration, and BAM is right at the centre of it. Ahead of Huddersfield Unlimited’s upcoming Business Forum on 24th June, which is hosted and sponsored by BAM, we spoke to Tom Wimpenny, Senior Site Manager, to learn more about the work happening behind the scenes and how the project aims to reshape the town.
From Huddersfield, For Huddersfield
Tom’s passion for the project is undeniable, not just as a professional, but as someone who calls Huddersfield home.
“I’ve grown up seeing the old market hall, and now we’re redeveloping it for a better purpose,” he said. “It excites me and certainly motivates me on a daily basis.”
This personal connection highlights BAM’s long-standing presence in the area. The company has worked closely with the local authority, the university, and other key stakeholders over the years, building both experience and trust within the town.
Collaboration at the Core
Local partnerships play a significant role in how BAM operates. Whether it’s teaming up with regional subcontractors or engaging directly with residents, the focus is on shared ownership and delivering something meaningful.
“We always strive to work with local partners. Many of the people working on site live locally, so they’ve got a real investment in doing the job well,” Tom shared.
This approach not only supports local businesses but also helps ensure the final result reflects the community’s needs and character.
Building for a Greener Future
Sustainability is becoming essential in construction, and BAM has taken clear steps to make it part of their everyday approach. From the early design stages, they look at ways to reduce carbon footprints and switch to more sustainable materials.
“There’s a trade-off between what we can deliver and what is required to produce sustainable projects,” Tom explained. “But we always strive to use our supply chain expertise to reduce our carbon footprint.”
Through thoughtful planning and collaboration, BAM aims to create spaces that are both functional and environmentally responsible.
Involving the Community Every Step of the Way
BAM believes that successful projects involve more than just builders and architects; they include the voices of the local community. That’s why they’re opening up opportunities for engagement through events like the Huddersfield Unlimited Business Forum and the upcoming Heritage Open Day in collaboration with the National Trust.
“We’ve got a local historian who comes round once a month, we’re working with T-Level students from Kirklees College, and we’re constantly thinking of new ways to involve the community.”
It’s a refreshing, people-focused approach that helps residents feel more connected to the changes happening around them.
Sharing the Vision
When asked what he hoped attendees would take away from the Business Forum on 24thJune, Tom said:
“I hope they’ll see the redevelopment of our town has truly begun, and that Kirklees Council is investing back into the local community. Working with partners like us, they’re creating a town centre with a prosperous future for residents.”
The redevelopment of Queensgate Market is just one part of a wider picture. With talks already taking place about Phase Two of the Cultural Heart and BAM’s work on the Transpennine Route Upgrade, there’s much more to come.
Advice for the Next Generation
Tom finished with some advice for students and young professionals considering a career in construction:
“Construction is a great industry to work in. Get some experience wherever you can. What we tend to find is that a lot of people then use that as a springboard to get into companies. Go for the interviews. Put yourself out there. Speak to people. It’s a brilliant industry to work in and I’ve had a great career so far.”
From digital innovation and green design to local partnerships and open-site engagement, BAM is helping shape a Huddersfield that’s not just new, but meaningful. It’s proof that construction isn’t just about structures; it’s about people, place, and purpose.
