Residents can get free help to develop their digital skills through local Kirklees Digital Hubs.

Supported by Kirklees Council, the hubs are run by local community organisations to improve people’s confidence when using digital technology so they become more confident, independent, and stay better connected.

The seven hubs, based at Chickenley, Crosland Moor, Dewsbury, Huddersfield, Paddock, Ravensthorpe and Thornhill Lees, are expected to fully re-open on 17 May as part of phase three of the government’s roadmap.

They provide free Wi-Fi and a space to access technology in a safe and covid-secure environment, as well as a range of free learning courses for anyone aged 19 or over, to suit people of all levels from beginners, to those with more advance skills.

Residents can also get online at home with help from a free device or data loan scheme for up to three months. It is envisaged that residents using the loan service will go on to further improve their digital skills and access other learning.

David Shepherd, Strategic Director for Growth & Regeneration said: “Technology is an integral part of modern life, and never has it been more valuable than over the past year. It’s enabled many people to continue with every-day-life as much as possible; to work, study and to stay in touch with family and friends.

We have a duty to make sure that no one is left behind and that everyone has the same opportunities and ability to benefit from technology. We encourage all our residents to think about developing their digital skills so that we are resilient for the future.

There’s a range of free courses available to anyone aged 19 and over that will help you develop your digital skills. Whether you want to do some online shopping, get better utility deals, access a virtual doctor’s appointment or just brush up on skills so you feel safer and more confident online, there’s a digital skills course for you.”

The council is committed to improving digital skills and access to digital technology across the district as it has many benefits for the local economy and health and wellbeing of residents including increased job opportunities, improved work or study capabilities from home and helping to reduce isolation.
