Huddersfield town centre is undergoing significant transformation, with major regeneration projects, new business opportunities, and a growing cultural scene. Huddersfield BID (Business Improvement District) is at the heart of this change, working to enhance the town’s appeal through investment, events, and business support.
We spoke with Sam Sharp, the manager of Huddersfield BID, to understand how the BID contributes to these exciting developments and what’s next for the town.
What is Huddersfield BID?
Huddersfield BID exists to add value to the town centre beyond what the local council provides. It is funded by businesses within the BID area whose rateable value is over £10,001, ensuring that the improvements benefit those investing in the town directly.
“Our priorities are to engage, enhance, and enterprise,” explains Sam. “We use the levy to create meaningful events, improve the town’s appearance, and support local businesses.”
One of the BID’s key roles is working alongside significant developments such as The Cultural Heart, The George Hotel, and The Light Cinema complex to ensure the town centre is clean, safe, and welcoming. “As each development happens, we provide jet washing, graffiti removal, and green planting to maintain a fresh and attractive space,” Sam says.
Why Huddersfield?
For Sam, Huddersfield is full of potential. “To me, it’s a place with endless opportunities,” she says. “We can create meaningful events, training, and opportunities for people, which drives me forward daily.”
The town’s strategic location between Leeds, Manchester, and Sheffield makes it an attractive business destination. “We have developments that will bring immediate benefits as soon as they open. The opportunities here are better than in many other towns,” Sam notes.
Boosting Huddersfield’s Night-Time Economy
Huddersfield BID significantly revitalises the town’s nightlife through initiatives like the Best Bar None Awards, a national scheme recognising high standards in bars and restaurants.
“We work with businesses to ensure they meet all legal requirements, provide staff training, and maintain safe and welcoming environments,” Sam explains. “Once they pass, we promote them and encourage the public to vote for their favourites.”
Beyond the awards, BID also provides spiking kits, drink covers, and bystander awareness training, ensuring a safer night-time experience for visitors.
Exciting Events on the Horizon
The BID is also behind some of Huddersfield’s most exciting events, including:
- Bingo Bingo in July – A lively mix of bingo and entertainment.
- A new Night Market in April – Supporting young traders and independent businesses.
- Get Your Geek On (21st June) – A significant town centre takeover attracting visitors across the UK.
“These events bring people into the town centre, encourage spending in local businesses, and create a vibrant community atmosphere,” Sam highlights.
Looking Ahead
With continued investment, Huddersfield’s future looks bright. “If I could wave a magic wand, I’d have The Cultural Heart, and The George Hotel completed tomorrow,” Sam admits. “But it has to be done properly. We need to be patient and keep moving forward.”
As developments progress, Huddersfield BID will continue championing the town’s businesses, improving public spaces, and delivering events showcasing what Huddersfield offers. With its ambitious vision and dedication, the BID ensures that Huddersfield’s future is one of growth, vibrancy, and opportunity.
