Launched on February 7th by local journalists Martin Shaw and Steven Downes, Huddersfield Hub aims to bring a fresh approach to the coverage of local news and sport.
It’s all about supporting the local community and highlighting the stories and great work by individuals, charities, businesses and other organisations that often goes unreported and unrecognised.
Launched in lockdown, Huddersfield Hub aims to provide a positive, interesting and informative read, supported by quality journalism, an alternative to the doom and gloom of the past 12 months.
Huddersfield Hub is completely independent and is run by a not-for-profit Community Interest Company.
News is free to access though there is an opportunity to support the website by becoming a patron. It is hoped that sponsorship and advertising will eventually make the website self-funding.
Martin Shaw, a journalist for 34 years, is a former news editor and print content editor of the Huddersfield Daily Examiner. He’s a self-confessed “old school journalist” who believes passionately in local news and loves telling people’s stories.
Steven Downes is a journalism graduate from the University of Huddersfield and has experience in media relations and communications. He’s a Huddersfield Town season card holder and looks after sports coverage for Huddersfield Hub.
The two friends teamed up to launch Huddersfield Hub after deciding that a fresh approach was needed.
Martin, who is editor of the website, said: “We’ve been planning Huddersfield Hub for many months and it was a venture that we came up with over a pint in the pub – long before the pandemic.
“In my case you could say the website has been 34 years in the making. We decided on a quiet launch in the middle of lockdown and we’ve been amazed at the response.
“We’ve had some great feedback and support and we’re building a strong community on our social media channels.
“People have told us they love what we are doing and they find our positive approach to local news refreshing.
“We’re all about supporting the community, telling great stories and shouting up for Huddersfield.
“If there’s anyone out there who shares our passion for Huddersfield and the local community we’d love to hear from them.”
