Kirklees residents are set to benefit from a brand new “reuse your rubbish” service being piloted by Kirklees Council with the installation of new collection containers at two local Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC) in the district. The containers were opened today by Councillor Neheed Mather when she delivered items to the HWRC at Emerald Street in Huddersfield; the other container is at Weaving Lane in Dewsbury.
The two containers will be used to hold items that can be utilised by others. Once the goods are sorted, they will be made available to local charities and good causes which will then sell them on to raise funds for their projects.
The scheme is being launched as a pilot in response to a commitment the Council made in its Waste and Recycling Strategy earlier this year. The long-term aim is to roll the project out to all HWRCs in Kirklees if the pilots prove successful.
Kirklees Councillor and portfolio holder for the environment, Naheed Mather, welcomed the new service in saying; “This new reuse service sees us putting in place one more part of our waste strategy that aims to make Kirklees a carbon neutral district. It means that residents won’t have to make an extra journey to a charity shop in town if they want to recycle unwanted clothes, bric-a-brac and household goods. It means creating a cycle of use and reuse for items and, just as importantly, local good causes will benefit from our partnership work with them.”
Residents can now deposit the following in the two Reuse containers – Clothing, Bedding/Curtains, Complete Toys, Small electrical items (must be working), Furniture – small items that one person can carry, Bicycles, Books, CDs, Records and DVDs, Jewellery, Bric-a-brac, Household items, Comics/Magazines and Nursery/baby Equipment.
Items that cannot be accepted at this time include – Electrical cookers, Ceiling light fittings, Child car seats, Car Batteries, Gas Appliances, Computers, Fridges or freezers, Washing Machines and Pirate copied CDs and DVDs.
Rachel Palmer, Kirklees Councils’ Project Manager for the reuse containers said; “This is an important new initiative for Kirklees, with winners all round and we are looking forward to seeing lots of residents taking the opportunity to drop off materials which can be left at the HWRCs between 8am – 4pm Monday to Saturday and 9am – 4pm on Sundays.”
