Kirklees Council is looking into ways to support town centres hospitality businesses ahead of the potential reopening on 12 April. Continental style pavement café culture could be coming to Huddersfield, Dewsbury & Batley.
The council is looking into using some of its outdoor spaces in Huddersfield, Dewsbury and Batley as pop up hospitality areas. The plans are still being worked up, but they could feature tables and chairs, and some protection from the elements. There would also be social distancing and security measures in place to keep everyone safe.
The council is asking town centre businesses to let them know if this is something that would be of interest to them, this will help them to both understand demand and work out the logistics in more detail.
Cllr Peter McBride, Cabinet member for Regeneration said: “We’re cautiously looking forward to the easing of restrictions, and the possibility of meeting up with friends and family for a drink or food outdoors. We know that for some of our bars, cafes and restaurants the lack of outside space will be a major concern when it comes to deciding whether to reopen, so we want to offer then a safe alternative. It’s early days in our planning, but if there is an appetite for this kind of space then we will do what we can to support businesses and make it happen.
