The Kirkwood Celebrates Nurses Day 2026

This Nurses Day, The Kirkwood is proudly celebrating the extraordinary compassion, professionalism and dedication of its nursing team, the people at the very heart of delivering outstanding care to local people and families affected by life limiting illness across Kirklees.

Every day, The Kirkwood’s nurses provide far more than expert clinical care. They offer comfort, dignity, reassurance and unwavering support during some of life’s most difficult moments, standing beside patients and loved ones when they need it most.

This year’s Nurses Day holds even greater significance following a challenging period for The Kirkwood last year, which has faced difficult financial pressures and important organisational decisions. Yet throughout every challenge, The Kirkwood’s nursing team has continued to demonstrate exceptional resilience, professionalism and heart.

Director of Clinical Services with The Kirkwood, Lynne Hall-Bentley said:

“Our nurses are at the very heart of everything we do. They go above and beyond to provide outstanding care, comfort and dignity to patients and their families during some of life’s most challenging moments.

“Over the last year, The Kirkwood has faced some incredibly difficult challenges and had to make some very tough decisions, but throughout it all, our nurses have continued to deliver services to our patients and their families. Their dedication and commitment have been inspiring, and they continue to embody the very best of The Kirkwood every single day.”

The incredible work of The Kirkwood’s nurses can be seen not only in the care they provide on the In-Patient Unit and in the community, but also in the countless ways they go above and beyond to support the hospice they love.

Dedicated nurse Alice recently highlighted the passion, warmth and commitment that drives so many of The Kirkwood’s nursing staff, showcasing how deeply meaningful hospice care can be for those privileged to provide it. Meanwhile, Angela’s remarkable decade of dedication through The Kirkwood Starlight Walk has shown how nursing with The Kirkwood becomes more than a profession, it becomes part of who you are, inspiring support far beyond the workplace.

That same spirit was powerfully demonstrated by a team of nurses who conquered the demanding Derbyshire Three Peaks challenge, raising more than £7,000 for patient care. Their determination to push themselves physically, all while continuing their emotionally demanding roles, perfectly captured the selfless commitment that defines The Kirkwood’s nursing team.

Other nurses have quite literally taken fundraising to new heights, from courageous skydives to personal challenges inspired by their passion for protecting and enhancing care for future patients and families. These extraordinary efforts underline a simple truth, for The Kirkwood’s nurses, caring does not end when their shift does.

Nurses Day is an opportunity to recognise nurses everywhere, but with The Kirkwood it is also a chance to say thank you, to celebrate a team whose compassion changes lives every day, whose strength inspires colleagues and communities, and whose dedication ensures local families never face life limiting illness alone.
